George & Ellen Hooke's first home after they married was 22 Galveston Road, Putney, a 4 bedroom, freehold, terraced property. As recorded in the 1891 census, there were just three of them living there, George, Ellen and their first baby daughter, Mildred. Here is a photo of the house in 2022 (centre). This property sold for £845,000 in 2010 and is valued at approx £1.75m in 2022.
By December 1898, as their family grew, they had moved into this house: 59 Cloudesdale Road, Tooting, another 4 bed terraced house in a very desirable area. By this time they were a family of seven with five children aged 8, 7, 6, 3 and 2 years old.
2014 valuations were in the region of £1.5m. The last sale of this property (2022) was before 1995.
The 1912 letters to Trixie were all written from their next, more substantial house, just a few streets away: 100 Drakefield Road, Tooting.
In 2014 (first photo below) it was a freehold, terraced house with 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and 2 reception rooms. Here's a link to Zoopla's 2014 information about the property. It was last sold for £1,975,000 in February 2013 but in 2022 it was ranked as the 2nd most expensive property (out of 33) in SW17 8RR, with a valuation of £3,117,000.
The next photo shows 100 Drakefield Road a few years later, in 2022, showing more clearly the beautiful windows in the front door.
George & Ellen's final home was 3 Woodlands Road, Barnes. (see below for a photo from the Hooke family archives)
On Google it now appears that this house has been demolished, (and a later visit to the area confirmed that this was the case) but other beautiful examples further up the street still exist and sell for £2m - £2.8m today. Photos below.
(Google Map) We have a handful of photos of George, Ellen, Mildred, Frances, Trixie, Ella, Cyril and his fiance Elaine, taken in the back garden during the early 1920s. We also have some photos of Cyril and Elaine's second baby, John Hooke, born at Barnes in September 1929, a year after Ellen died.
